Small is beautiful : In Praise of Short & Sweet Events

My Grafficker Alley table, September 12th

This year I found out more and more that «small is beautiful »: short and sweet events work better for me, an indie SF author and artist, as the big-city bookfairs where you are lost in a sea of authors.

  • The table fees are way less expensive (often under 100$ or even free in some events)
  • The short driving distance from home means not having to stay at an expensive hotel.
  • The public going there will be made of “niche” public who already appreciate your genre.
  • The duration is often a single day.
  • In a smaller exhibition space, people who get there take the time to *look* at the booths.
  • The quality of the interactions with the readers is better.

My lil’table at a Blooming Boulevards plant sale event in my city, last year !
  • Getting your stuff and banners on site! This time I had the help of my husband to get me to the south of Mississauga.
  • The cost in personal energy and time can be variable. See the examples below. It is not something I will do in my 80s.
  • The sales might not be as high as you expect. (But there are other advantages like meeting new fans.)
  • the table location can be inaccessible to most of the public (in one library event my table was on a fourth-story, while the public stayed mostly in the 1-2 lower levels.) See sales point.

Surprises at the Grafficker Alley!

A simple graphic art event in September 12th turned out to be a joyful event.

The Grafficker Alley (organized by Anime North) allowed me to meet the public and present my comic books and a few books and short-story collections along with the graphic novels. A lot of students like to practice their French, so I sold the French version of a graphic novel! Even my historical novel at Les Éditions David (le Kaiju de Mississauga, found their readers!

The venue was the Small Arms Inspection Building, a place with large large floor-to-ceiling windows, so the light was good. grosse valise à rouettes pleine de livres! All on floor level, so very accessible when you have to drag a book-filled suitcase… and my banners (top photo).

It was a simple day event in my city, so I asked the husband to drive me and my stuff there. I dismounted my display in a record time and managed to carry everything using the transit system (Shoot-out to the Mississauga Transit MiWay!)

Même mon roman historique chez Les Éditions David (le Kaiju de Mississauga, en-dessous de l’affiche Ruego sur le présentoir rouge) a trouvé preneur ! Bref, j’en suis revenue avec une valise plus légère!

The Safran

I attended my first  Safran in 2024, then 2025, but this year the grants were late, so the organizers managed with a lot of will to get a free venue, and mounted a full one-day program (instead of three) on a Saturday in March, at St. Catharine’s, ON. We were four authors, and here is me at my table, signing a graphic novel.

Michèle signing her books at the 2026 Safran in St.Catharine’s

I remember also mini-exhibitions in the street close to the Image Collection Comic Book Store in Mississauga, in a cinema, at an outdoor movie presenting a superheros flick… All left good impressions.

Are the new people we get to know. My table neighbors were young artists (and I bought one of the painting that had not found its public atthe end of the day.)

I had the unexpected pleasure to meet two Toronto Science-fiction fans, the editor of Amazing Stories Lloyd Penney and his partner Yvonne. They had themselves a lot of experience in those events, and left with two books. Lloyd even push the nicety to pay me in 5$ bills, so I could offer change to the next fans (who had mostly 20$ in hand.). That small attention went to my heart. Thanks Lloyd and Yvonne! You can support the online magazine here with Patreon.

And when I have a fruitful conversation with a fan, I often ask to leave their name in my honor notebook (which is my writer’s notebook). So my notes are in pencil, but I give a nice color of pen for the fans to use.

This is really for my joy. I have colorful signatures in carnets dating from 2006!

My colleague Mark Leslie Lefebvre who is a indie pro attending both big and small events since 30+ years offers a lot of advice with “A Book in Hand.” (From the saying “a bird in hand is worth two birds in the bush”). Here is the link to the ebook and the Kickstarter campaign for this book

At the time of writing this blog entry, Mark is attending the Sudbury Creature Kon, specialized in horror/fantastic, with a worthy table.

Fun at the Signing Table: It’s Tax Season again!

Writers and artists have a lot to do to complete their tax return, as self-employed workers. So if you finished, have a cheery laugh at this page showing my plight. You may see by the year that it is not from yesterday… with all the paper forms. The webcomic was originally published in French, so I translated it fast to get it to you!

(For the non-Canadians, RRSP is a bit like a 401-k account)

It’s been a long time… (since I published a graphic novel)

Feast yer eyes! A mock-up of the book.
I am waiting for my author copies…

I am emerging from a frenzy of art events in Montréal and the complexity of putting up a graphic novel with *Vellum* of all things. Now I can proudly boast my latest publication :  Maîtresse des vents, a 92-page graphic novel in French, from my own SF universe. My cover pic has been put into magnificent colors by my talented colleague Frank Fournier.

It is my first graphic novel published since a few years. I published with my own indie house because I was tired of waiting after various French publishers all hoping for the next popular thing.

I had a blast drawing 16 new pages and sketches to complete the story, and will work to distribute the paperback version in some outlets. Here’s one of those recent additions.

There is a section with various sketches at the end of the book. It will be a small pocket book format. The electronic copies are available on various platforms.

If you are patient, I will get the English version done as soon as possible. After all, the computer technology and Clip Studio make this endeavor less painful.

A Cup of Chocolate Stories!

Whatever is the flavor of your life and your deep-rooted beliefs, the shorter days leading to the holidays often coincides with difficult situations, forcing hard decisions.

It is a time when the heart may feel the relentless pressure of the exterior world, and also experiments inner turmoils of its own. No wonder, then, that so many striving souls lack confidence! When everything darkens, I crave for the oldest of pick-me-up, a good book and a cup of hot chocolate.

I love chocolate (I know, not original since I share this taste with hundreds of million of people). Dark chocolate, artisan-made chocolate, ethical… and also, hot chocolate, at certain times. For me, hot chocolate reminds me of the scout camps, when we doled out the evening collations to the cubs after a long day of activities.

I rarely drink while reading a book, because I might get drops on the pages. But yes, on rare occasions I have enjoyed the treat of reading on a good chair, with the cup of chocolate nearby.

As the Holiday Season is upon us, I put out my first collection in paper and ebook, 5 Chocolate-Rich Holiday Stories published by Echofictions. Those new, upbeat stories include three sweet romances set in the Holiday period, and they’re best enjoyed with a cup of chocolate or your favorite treat!

Out on the stores!

Reading Shock…

The reader, after finishing a good book, want's to thank the writer A.C. Crispin, but finds out she's gone.

I just finished “Sarek” an excellent SF novel by Ann. C. Crispin, set in the Star Trek universe.

In these trying times, I need some comfort readings, which I get from some Star Trek novels.

I just finished Sarek, (a story with Spock’s dad), a tale with finesse and a touch of Pon Farr that enriches the universe of the original series. (I ignored the ST reboot at the cinema). There, we meet Amanda in depth, and learn about her love affair with Sarek. The novel shows up this Vulcans are not walking cold computers, not perfect, but people with their own emotions, tradition clashes, preferences, disagreements. But they settle their difference in a more zen manner.

As with “Vulcan Heart” by Josepha Sherman (another fine writer we lost in 2012) and Susan Shwartz (many thanks to you!), this reading leaves me with a strong impression that our humanity, sick with conspirators, hate groups, anti-vaccines and anti-science, would need Vulcans (and also the Bene Gesserit, but that’s another universe). Just the basic control of emotions and the philosophy would prevent many problems from even happening (what’s the logic in despising dark-skinned persons?) in addition to cleaning up most prejudices.

The only flaw in this book, alas, is that we can no longer thank its author … Ann Carol Crispin left to count the stars in 2013. It’s a shock when it is a contemporaneous author who disappears.

Has the same thing happened to you? What was your most shocking experience? Please, share your testimony, because I haven’t found my zen state yet. So many writers to be grateful to, so little time!

Fortunately, Ann C. Crispin and the other departed writers have left many books behind, like a trail of excellent chocolate chips leading to the stars!

Wonders of Vegas (1)

Las Vegas has a Mayor, Carolyn Goodman, since 2011! She has succeeded her husband Oscar (deceased) and pursues progressive policies. Public transit is well developed, among other things.

Murals

This week, I open with murals. In every city I visit, I try to capture the mural art. And Las Vegas has some amazing art.

This is behind the restaurant Vegenation, which I will talk about soon.Une murale qui anime un triste stationnement!

Potential Patreon Partners

   To my fantastic fans,

You’re invited to step aboard my Patreon galleon
and sail to new uncharted territories!

micheletroubadoure

I came to Patreon  at first to support my fellow artists friends. And I am still supporting them via this fantastic system.

But now a flurry of new projects are claiming for existence:

  1. Windmistress, YA SF, 43 finished pages on 50.
  2. Honor Road, manga, 200 pages, 22 finished
  3. Joys of the Signing Table, 100 gags published on my blog, meaning a 250-page album in manga format. I need at least thirty hours to convert the graphic files to the publication format.

I am currently working on two SF novels ( Azuras and Grasshoppers), and planning for more.

Your kind support on Patreon will make a difference for my writing and drawing fiction, especially as I write in both English and French. It will allow me to hire help for translation and design, and to get the formation I need to hone my craft. Because I am always learning.

It will make a difference for you, as your pledge will reap rewards: free reading, behind-the-scene sketches, ex-libris, ebooks…

A quick pencil sketch for the new year, as the three-page long installments of my comics took more time.

Occupied October

This October is such a busy month that I am lagging behing my posts.

So here is a placeholder post while I organize the mailing of my SF novels overseas, make frenetic preparations for my  depart for the Utopiales festival, and put up new e-books, tinker with websites, recuperate from my Oakville half marathon race… and run to a scout camp this week-end!

More dealines piling on

So the next Signing table comics will have to wait a little!

What is Trendy Today…

What is trendy today… will have cooled down tomorrow! Don’t lose time chasing the latest fads!

As for the publishing delays, the new realities of the writing world have reduced them. Nevertheless, that advice stays: better write/draw what you love!
